Как различать weather и whether
Weather — погода: rain, wind, sunshine, temperature. Whether — союз, который используется, когда есть вопрос, сомнение или выбор: «ли», «будь то», «независимо от того». По звучанию слова практически совпадают.

Weather — погода
Weather описывает атмосферные условия в определённом месте и времени.
- good weather — хорошая погода;
- bad weather — плохая погода;
- cold weather — холодная погода;
- hot weather — жаркая погода;
- weather forecast — прогноз погоды;
- weather conditions — погодные условия;
- severe weather — опасные/суровые погодные условия.

- Have you checked the weather forecast?
Нейтрально: bad weather, nice weather. Обычно не говорят a weather или weathers о повседневной погоде.
Whether — «ли»
Whether вводит косвенный вопрос или ситуацию неопределённости.
- I don't know whether she's coming.
- We need to decide whether this is worth the cost.
- She asked whether I was free.
- I'm not sure whether he understands.
Во многих таких предложениях whether можно приблизительно перевести русским «ли».
Whether ... or — выбор между вариантами
- I can't decide whether to stay or leave.
- We need to know whether the problem is technical or financial.
- She couldn't tell whether he was joking or serious.
Whether особенно естественно, когда альтернативы явно перечислены.
Whether or not
Конструкция может означать «ли ... или нет» или «независимо от того, ... или нет».
- I don't know whether or not he'll agree.
- We need to decide whether to go or not.
- Whether you like it or not, we have to leave.
Возможны whether or not he comes и whether he comes or not.
Whether + to-infinitive
Когда человек размышляет о том, какое действие выбрать, используется whether to + verb.
- I don't know whether to call him.
- She couldn't decide whether to accept the offer.
- We're discussing whether to expand the team.
Перед to-infinitive используется whether: I don't know whether to go, а не if to go.
Whether и if
В обычных косвенных yes/no-вопросах оба варианта часто возможны:
- I don't know if she's coming.
- I don't know whether she's coming.
Но whether предпочтительно или необходимо в ряде конструкций.
Перед to-infinitive
- I don't know whether to stay.
Непосредственно перед or not
- I don't know whether or not he'll come.
После предлога
- It depends on whether we have enough time.
Whether также часто звучит естественнее в более формальном стиле и при явном перечислении альтернатив.
Weather может быть глаголом
У weather есть менее очевидное глагольное значение: выдержать трудный период или подвергаться воздействию погоды.
Weather the storm
Пережить кризис или трудности.
- The company managed to weather the economic storm.
Weathered
Повреждённый или изменившийся под воздействием погоды.
- a weathered wooden door;
- a weathered face.
Произношение
Для большинства носителей weather и whether — омофоны или практически омофоны.
Поэтому разницу приходится определять по смыслу и написанию.
