Чем отличаются ask и request

Ask — универсальный глагол для вопросов и просьб в обычной речи. Request значительно формальнее и чаще встречается в официальной переписке, правилах, заявлениях и сервисных процессах. При этом главное различие не только в стиле: конструкции после этих глаголов тоже отличаются.

Ask — задать вопрос

Не говорят request someone a question. Для «задать вопрос» нужен ask.

Ask someone for something

Если называем и человека, и то, что хотим получить, человек ставится перед for.

Ask someone to do — попросить человека сделать

  • I asked him to wait.

Ask to do — попросить разрешения или возможности сделать самому

  • She asked to speak to the manager.

Request — официально попросить или запросить

  • We requested further information.
  • She requested a copy of the contract.

Как глагол — без for

We requested information.
Но существительное: a request for information.

Request that — формально потребовать или попросить, чтобы...

  • We requested that the meeting be postponed.
  • The manager requested that everyone arrive on time.
  • She requested that her name not be published.

Особенно в American English после request that часто используется форма без -s: request that he attend. В British English встречаются и другие варианты, включая конструкции с should.

Request someone to do

Такая модель возможна, особенно в официальных инструкциях:

  • Visitors are requested to remain seated.
  • Guests are requested not to smoke.

В обычной разговорной просьбе намного естественнее ask someone to do.
